Bernice Young Newell, age 100 of Hendersonville, Tennessee passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at her home.
Bernice was born on February 7, 1923 in Ripley, Mississippi to the late Jeff and Vashti Young.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, L.H. Newell; brother and sister-in-law, Bodine and Eurora Young; and sister and brother-in-law, Waurine and James McMillin.
She is survived by her daughters, Vickie and Connie Newell; nieces, Margo (Mark) Black, Marlea (David) Johnson; nephews, Nicky Young and Tim (Donna) McMillin; seven great nieces and nephews; and thirteen great, great nieces and nephews.
Bernice attended Freed-Hardeman College where she met her husband, a gospel preacher. She served with him in several Church of Christ congregations in Oklahoma, Missouri, Michigan, Alabama, and Tennessee for over forty years until his passing. Bernice was currently a member of the Hendersonville, TN Church of Christ.
Always a gracious hostess, she was known for her great cooking and hospitality. She was also an excellent seamstress and started a sewing group at church to supply clothing items for mission areas. Bernice worked as a secretary for several doctors over the years and was also the first secretary for Goodpasture Christian School. Finally before retirement, she was the bookkeeper for Hendersonville Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Goodpasture Christian School or the Missions Fund at Hendersonville Church of Christ.
The family also wishes to thank Adoration Hospice for their compassionate care during this time.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Friday, April 21, 2023 from the Chapel of Sumner Funeral & Cremation Lakeside with Bro. Keith Parker and Bro. Les Chapman officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. and Friday from 10:00 A.M. until time of service.
