Arthur “Art” Joseph Burke of Hendersonville, Tennessee passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2022, he was 87 years old.

He was born on October 27, 1935, in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Patrick Arthur Burke and Gertrude Freda Laudun Burke.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death in death by sisters, Audrey Burke and Ellen Burke.

Art is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Allen Burke of Hendersonville; sons, Arthur Joseph (Lisa) Burke, Jr., of Hendersonville and Patrick (Robin) Burke of Castilian Springs; grandchildren, Arthur Joeseph Burke, III; great-grandchildren, Sabrina; step-grandchildren, Terry White, Jr, Gregory Forbes; step-great-grandchildren, Gregory, Tommy, Hailey; step-great-great-grandchildren, Cayden, Nate, Paisley, Daniel, Rhett, Greyson, Aubrey and Jackson; sister, Patricia Burke Meyer of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

Art had a difficult upbringing as a young man living in the Irish channel with his 3 sisters Audrey, Ellen, and Patricia. The Irish Channel, a rough area of New Orleans, is a quaint neighborhood named in honor of the wave of Irish immigrants who first settled there in the 1830s. Thankfully his sisters Ellen, Patrica and Audrey wanted him to have a good education and saw that Art was a promising hard-working young man and afforded him an education at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi at Saint Stanislaus an all-boys boarding school. He played football and ran track and was offered a scholarship to Alabama and Arkansas to attend college.

Due to injuries, he suffered in high school as a young man and a promise he made to his mother he did attend school but never accepted these scholarships. After attending school for a short time Art had to leave because he couldn’t afford the tuition and books to attend college. Bring the proud man he was he didn’t want to ask more of his family, so he joined the military as a Marine. He served his country honorably for 4 years reaching the rank of Sergeant as a radio operator. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky and while he was on leave in Nashville, is where he met Barbara Allen. Art was honorably discharged in 1961.

Barbara and Art were married on November 1, 1957, and had two wonderful children, Patrick was their first born and in 1967, they moved from their home in Nashville to Hendersonville and shortly thereafter Arthur Jr (Jody) was born.

Art and Barbara worked hard to provide for the family. Art enjoyed the world of electronics and being that he was a radio operator in the Marines he applied for a job at Stansell Electric then later went to work for General Electric in the housewares and electronics division. Art worked for forty plus years for GE & Thompson consumer electronics and retired from them in 1998.

Art enjoyed woodworking and listening to music, watching high school football, love to dance & sing, love Karaoke, most of all loved his family and never met a stranger!
