On July 31, 2024, the Hendersonville Police Department received a report of a debit card scam. The victim was asked to place their debit cards in their mailbox so that the chips could be physically analyzed.

The scammer called from a “spoofed” phone number that appeared on the victim’s Caller ID to be from their bank’s fraud department. The scammers convinced the victim that the chips in their debit cards had been compromised and needed to be physically analyzed. The victim placed the debit cards in their mailbox, and a “courier” picked them up, claiming they would analyze and return the cards. Later, the victim noticed several fraudulent charges on their account. Throughout this scam, the scammers kept the victim on the phone and had convincing knowledge of the victim’s personal information.

The Hendersonville Police Department would like to remind everyone of the following tips to help prevent anyone else from falling victim to scams:

1. Legitimate banks and credit card companies will never ask you to place your credit cards in your mailbox.
2. Never share your credit card details, especially through unsecure channels. Scammers use these tactics to steal your financial information.
3. If you receive a suspicious request, contact your credit card company directly using the number on the back of your card. The credit card company can confirm whether the request is legitimate.
4. If you believe you’ve been targeted or have fallen victim, report the incident to your credit card company and local law enforcement agency immediately. Early reporting can help prevent further damage.
5. Stay vigilant and protect your personal and financial information.
6. If it sounds suspicious, it probably is.

Police ask anyone with information on this case to please call and report the information to the Hendersonville Police Department at (615) 822-1111 or the Hendersonville Crime Stoppers at (615) 594-4113.
