The City of Hendersonville experienced significant damage from the tornado on 12/9/23.

Current Road Closures:

  • New Shackle Island Rd is still blocked from Volunteer Dr to West Main Street.
  • East Main Street has roadblocks near Winston Hills and Carrington Rd areas.
  • Power is still out throughout most of the city, which includes traffic lights. Main Street has reopened in the other areas and officers will be out helping direct traffic. However, anyone who can stay home should please do so. There is debris throughout the city and traffic may be heavy without operational traffic signals. As a reminder, when traffic lights aren’t working, all intersections should be treated like a four-way stop.

City Services:

Police, Fire and Public Works are continuing to work around the clock. Limb crews will begin collection as they are able once roads have been cleared.

Drakes Creek Park has moderate damage and is closed until further notice. The Volleyball Courts and Playground at Drakes Creek on Main St. are also closed.

What areas have been damaged?
Based on preliminary assessments the majority of the damage is to the businesses and residences in the Main Street area. Power lines are damaged and down throughout the impact area, causing city-wide power outages. Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads if possible. Excessive traffic is delaying response crews.

The City Codes Department is already out doing structural assessments to keep the public safe.

When will my power be restored?
NES crews have been working around the clock and have sent the majority of their resources to help in Hendersonville. They have not provided a timeline for when power will be restored. Residents should contact their provider directly to report outages. Links to the outage maps for each provider are below.

What resources are available?
The American Red Cross is set up at Corner Stone Church, 1410 Stop 30 Rd. Residents who are displaced or have needs can get help there. If you are without power, follow these safety tips: redcross.org/poweroutage. If you need Red Cross assistance, please call 1-800-RED CROSS.

What can I do to help? Are volunteers needed?
Most of the damaged areas are still too hazardous for volunteers at this time. Please stay home until it is safe to help. The United Way is working with the Red Cross to coordinate any needed donations. Visit www.unitedwaysumner.org or call (615) 461 – 8371.

I have damage. What should I do?
Damage assessments are still ongoing throughout the city for state and federal reporting. If you have damage, you should take pictures and contact your insurance company directly.

When will traffic lights be restored?
In addition to the power outages, many of the traffic signals on Main Street were damaged by the storm. Multiple crews are already making repairs. Police Officers will be at intersections directed traffic during busy times. As a reminder, when traffic lights aren’t working, all intersections should be treated like a four-way stop.

Limb and brush collection status
All available resources will be working overtime to help collect storm vegetation as quickly as possible. They are prioritizing the worst areas of the city. Use the following link to report trees blocking a roadway: https://www.hvilletn.org/i-want-to/report-a-problem.
