College Baseball:
Vanderbilt Commodores – Win 7-6 in 12 innings
The Vanderbilt Commodores were locked in a duel on Saturday as they took on Arizona. Rocker was on the mound for the Dores and struggled in the first inning surrendering 3 runs. After that, he settled down and finished the game with 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Before exiting, he would let up a 2-run home run that gave Arizona the lead back 5-3. Vandy fought back though and took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning off a Young home run. However, Arizona would force extra innings as they scored the tying run in the top of the ninth inning. Both teams worked out of jams in extra innings, but finally, in the bottom of the 12th inning, Gonzalez singled with the bases loaded and Vandy won the game.
Tennessee Volunteers – Loss 6-0
The Tennessee Volunteers fought hard, but their bats just never woke up in their first matchup in Omaha. The Vols were held to 6 hits, and 0 home runs as they faced off against Virginia. It was a close game until the seventh inning when Virginia scored 4 runs in the inning and took a 5-0 lead. They would tack on 1 more before the end of the game to officially win 6-0.
Nashville Sounds: Loss 8-7, Weather Delay, Win 6-2
The Sounds wrapped up their series against the Gwinnett Stripers over the weekend, splitting the games 1-1 (only 2 were played due to a weather cancellation of Saturday’s game which will be made up in July). In the first matchup on Friday, the Sounds held an early 6-0 lead but eventually lost it. The Stripers tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to send it to extra innings. Nashville did score a run in the 10th, but Gwinnett plated 2 runs and won in walk-off fashion 8-7. Sunday’s matchup was a little bit different. The Sounds again jumped out to the early lead, but this time managed to hold on. Keston Hiura helped boost his team to victory by smashing 2 home runs in the game.
Atlanta Braves: Win 9-1, Loss 9-1, Win 1-0
The Braves ended up winning the series against the St. Louis Cardinals by picking up 2 wins over the weekend. In Friday’s matchup, the Braves had 2 separate 4 run innings to help propel them to victory. Max Fried threw 7 innings and only gave up 1 run. Saturday’s game was pushed to a doubleheader on Sunday due to the weather. The first game on Sunday was all Cardinals. Wainwright held the Braves lineup in check to only 1 run off of 3 hits. The only Braves run came from Freddie Freeman, who stole home when Almonte struck out. Atlanta got back on track for the final game of the series. Smyly threw 5.2 innings without surrendering a run, while Acuña Jr blasted a homerun in the third inning. The Braves only allowed 2 hits and would win 1-0.
Cincinnati Reds: Loss 8-2, Loss 7-5, Loss 3-2
The Cincinnati Reds ran into a brick wall over the weekend in the San Diego Padres. On Friday, Chris Paddock took the mound and struck out 11 Reds’ batters. On the offensive side for the Padres, Will Myers smashed 2 long balls in the game to help his team win 8-2. In the second matchup, the Reds were late in the game at 5-5, but then a 2-run home run from Ha-Seong Kim (who replaced Tatis Jr after leaving the game earlier after an injury). That ended up being the game-winning home run as neither team scored after that. The Padres completed the four-game sweep of the Reds on Sunday. All 3 Padres’ runs came in the third inning when Will Myers hit a triple that scored 2 baserunners. Then on a throwing error by Votto, Myers managed to cross the plate as well. The Reds did make things interesting late in the game as they scored 2 runs in the eighth inning. However, it was not enough to mount the full comeback and they fell 3-2.
PGA:
Jon Rahm won the US Open by 1 stroke over Louis Oosthurizen. Rahm finished -6 for the tournament after he shot a 67 in the final round. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau tied for 26th.
NASCAR:
Kyle Larson continued his winning streak as he won at Nashville Superspeedway. He led for 264 laps after starting in the 5th position.
In the Xfinity Series, Kyle Busch finished as the winner (earned his 100th win). He started at the front and ended at the front after leading for 122 laps. Chad Finchum came up just short of earning a spot in the race, but Josh Berry from Hendersonville TN finished in 4th in the race.
Ryan Preece won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series after only leading for 8 laps.
Indycar:
Alex Palou of Honda won the Grand Prix of Road America. His 2nd win of the season.
Nashville SC: Loss 2-0
After having a few weeks off, Nashville SC was back in action on Friday taking on NY Red Bulls. The Red Bulls put up the only 2 goals of the game when Fabio scored in the 37th minute (his first MLS goal) and Kye Duncan scored in the 56th minute. Nashville was outmatched by a team that has hit their stride. The Red Bulls have won 4 straight and outshot Nashville 13-8.
