Mr. Marvin Masters Barnes, Jr., age 70, of Lafayette, and originally Marianna and Miami, Florida, passed away Friday, November 8, 2024, at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. There will be a Memorial Service announced at a later date by The Alexander Funeral Home.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Nelson-Barnes. He is the father of three children from previous relationships: daughters Ashanti Barnes (with Linda Ellison); Kierah Barnes-Vaval, and son Jarrod Barnes (with Laura Barnes). He is also a devoted stepfather to four children: Telise Nelson, Tyann Nelson, Nigel Nelson, and Malcolm Nelson. Marvin was a cherished brother to Gregory Barnes and Mark Ruff, and a beloved sibling to his sisters, Portia Barnes and Ebony Barnes. He is also fondly remembered by his god-sister, Ira Everett-Garrett (Billy).

Marvin’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Antoine Davis, Jr., Kaya Barnes-Hoo, Hans Vaval, Jr., and Kairo Vaval, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Master Barnes, Sr., and Effie Louise Dickens, who raised him with love and instilled in him a strong work ethic and a zest for life.

Marvin pursued higher education at Miami-Dade College, completing one year of technical studies, followed by a year at ITT Tech. His professional journey began at the Port of Miami, where he was a dedicated member of the International Longshoremen’s Association. He later embraced his entrepreneurial spirit, building a successful career as a self-employed business owner.

A devoted member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Marvin found strength in his faith and community, where he was known for his kindness and unwavering belief. His favorite scripture is Proverbs 17:17 where it states: “A true companion is loving all the time, and is a brother that is born for when there is distress”.

Marvin had a passion for American muscle cars, which he admired for their power and craftsmanship. He was an avid basketball enthusiast and enjoyed the rhythm of jazz and contemporary music (especially Sade), often sharing his favorite tunes with friends and family. His interests were a reflection of his dynamic personality and love for life.
