A student at Station Camp Middle School was detained Thursday morning after bringing a loaded gun onto campus, according to authorities.

School officials said as students were heading to class at the start of the day, a report was made to the School Resource Officer that a student had a weapon. The SRO immediately located and detained the student. A loaded pistol was found inside the student’s backpack.

The student will face charges through the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, along with disciplinary action from the school district. Under district policy, bringing a weapon to school is a zero-tolerance offense that results in immediate expulsion from any Sumner County school.

Officials credited students who quickly reported the situation. Their actions allowed Deputy Given to respond immediately and secure the weapon without incident.

“The safety of our students and staff is non-negotiable,” said Sumner County Sheriff Eric Craddock. “Because students spoke up and our School Resource Officer acted quickly, a dangerous situation was stopped before anyone was harmed. This is a reminder that see-something-say-something works.”

Sumner County Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Lanford said he was thankful for the swift response by school staff and law enforcement.

“Everyone involved handled this situation the right way,” Lanford said. “The student has been expelled and will not return to a Sumner County Schools campus.”
