Hendersonville Parks Department is mourning the loss of their gym supervisor and coach, Tom Battle.

Coach Battle passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

“It is with extremely sadness that we post this today to let you all know that one of the most beloved figures in the history of our Parks Department and a man who left a mark on so many people in our city as a teacher, coach, umpire, gym supervisor, summer camp worker, volunteer, mentor and more has passed away this morning,” the department posted on Facebook.

Beginning his work with Hendersonville Parks Department over 40 years ago, Coach Battle started out refereeing basketball in 1980. He then became a gym supervisor for the Parks basketball program.

He also umpired baseball in the park, coached summer league baseball, assisted with the annual Pre-school Track Meet and Lunch with Santa and also worked with the Parks special needs sports programs and summer camp. Coach Battle countlessly showed his dedication and love to the park by making himself available whenever help was needed.

With a triple major in History, Health and P.E. Recreation, Coach Battle also taught and coached in Sumner County schools. He taught 8th grade American History at Station Camp Middle School, sponsored the student council program and ran the clock for both football and basketball games. He also worked at Knox Doss Middle School.

“The amount of lives he touched is immeasurable. Please be in prayer for Coach Battle’s family,” Hendersonville Parks Department said.
