Gallatin High School is displaying a new collection of art along the Town Creek Greenway for the next two months. The students’ artwork is the second of five collections exhibited by the City of Gallatin and funded by the Arts Build Communities (ABC) Grant. The first collection featured photos by Photographer Ernest Stark, whose studio was located in downtown Gallatin from 1905 to 1935.
“If you haven’t seen the greenway along Town Creek, it’s already a beautiful place to walk, but the new displays really add something to the experience,” said Gallatin Mayor Paige Brown. “Public art enhances our community in so many ways, and I hope this inspires both creativity and smiles.”
Iris Saunders and Catherine Stewart are the two Visual Art Educators at Gallatin High School who provided students’ artworks. Their biography in the display states, “projects vary from an introductory interpretation of a Master’s work to an in-depth exploration of different techniques and media…including oil pastel, graphite, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, chalk pastel, colored pencil and pen and ink.” Gallatin High’s collection of 13 paintings were created by students from grades 9-12.
Each collection of art features ten 24 x 18 displays. The exhibition begins at the trailhead at College Street and extends to North Westland Avenue. The ABC grant program is designed to provide support for arts projects that broaden access to arts experiences, address community quality of life issues through the arts, or enhance the sustainability of asset-based cultural enterprises. The $7,000 matching grant (50% funded by Arts Council & City of Gallatin) is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee, Tennessee Arts Commission.
