Vape detectors have been installed in all 11 middle schools within the Sumner County Schools district, WKRN reports.

The detectors have been placed in every bathroom of the school. They function like smoke detectors, but they don’t sound an alarm. Instead, they alert specific staff members, like School Resource Officers, when vaping is detected.

Scott Langford, the Director of Schools, shared with News 2 that this technology is a “powerful deterrent” as the trend of vape smoking rises among young people.

Nearly 200 of the detectors will be installed across Sumner County middle and high schools. According to Langford, installations will be complete in the high schools after Christmas.
