Every August, The Hermitage Hotel, Nashville’s iconic and storied gathering place for over 100 years, celebrates the Women’s Suffrage Movement and the ratification of the 19th Amendment. The historic hotel played a pivotal role as the decision to grant women the right to vote nationwide came down to Tennessee delivering the 36th and final state victory. During the summer of 1920, The Hermitage Hotel, located across the street from the State Capitol, was the epicenter of an embattled mix of pro- and anti-suffragists, legislators and lobbyists in the weeks leading up to the ratification of the 19th amendment. With anti-ratification forces wearing red roses squaring off against yellow-rose-wearing pro-suffrage campaigners, the suffrage struggle at The Hermitage Hotel came to be known as “The War of the Roses.”

The Hermitage Hotel’s signature Yellow Rose Tea offered every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in August ($95 per person/$45 for children under 10), allows guests to take a step back in time to the origin of the Women’s Suffrage Movement, which began as an impassioned discussion about women’s rights among five women gathered for afternoon tea. Named a National Historic Landmark for its role in the Women’s Suffrage Movement, The Hermitage Hotel welcomes guests and locals alike to enjoy themed cocktails named after the protagonists of the Women’s Suffrage Movement like The Carrie a robust and bold staunch made with Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, Chambord, Holiday Syrup and Chocolate bitters in honor of Carie Chapman Catt or The Anne a charismatic, sophisticated and savvy beverage made with Ford’s Slow Gin, Prosecco, Chartreuse Herbal Syrup and Lemon in honor of Anne Dallas Dudley along with many others. Favorite menu items include delicious savory sandwiches like the Jambon de Paris with potato and truffle crostini, Créme Freaiche, Blini, Caviar with smoked salmon, Feta Cheese, Nasturtium with heirloom tomato and strawberry tartlet alongside an array of sweets like the Rose Éclairs, Panna Cotta, Chocolate Genoise and more. Guests are invited to sip on champagne and tea while listening to live music from a pianist playing music from the 1920’s era and will get to take home a commemorative keepsake menu plus a yellow rose upon departure.
