Saturday, August 10
4:30pm
210 Old Highway 25, Castalian Springs
On Saturday, August 10, Historic Castalian Springs will host a tour of the historic Hawthorn Hill home.
The circa 1805 brick Federal home is preserved as close to its original state as possible and is rarely open for tours. Original stenciling, paint, and plaster make you feel like you’ve entered a time capsule of 19th-century Middle Tennessee history. Tours are limited and only offered one Saturday a month – don’t miss out on this unique experience!
According to the Historic Castalian Springs website, Hawthorn Hill was “was originally owned by John Bearden who had the Federal-style brick house constructed. Shortly after in 1817, Colonel Humphrey Bate, a war of 1812 veteran, purchased the property, and it remained in the Bate family until 1936.
Hawthorn Hill is notable both as an example of early Tennessee architecture as well as for the accomplishments of Dr. Humphrey Howell Bate, Jr., the grandson of Colonel Humphrey Bate. Dr. Bate Jr. is most well-known for his leading role in the string band called ‘Dr. Humphrey Bate and His Possum Hunters.’ Bate played the harmonica which, according to family tradition, he learned from the one of the formerly enslaved workers at Hawthorn Hill.
In 1925, the band first performed on the WDAD radio station, where they quickly gained popularity and led to them becoming the first old-time string band to play at the newly established Grand Ole Opry. During this time, his daughter, Alcyone Bate, who played ukulele, became the first woman to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
In 2007, Hawthorn Hill become property of the Tennessee Historical Commission and currently operates under the management of Historic Castalian Springs.”

Country Music Hall of Fame
222 Rep. John Lewis Way S, Nashville
The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum unveiled a Tom Petty display highlighting how his southern roots shaped his music and his continued influence on new generations of country music artists. Tom Petty: Where I Come From features several western-themed artifacts from Petty’s wide-ranging and generation-defining career. The display is included with museum admission and runs through summer 2025.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member Petty believed his music straddled the American South, where he grew up, and Southern California, where he resided from 1974 until his death in 2017. Petty cited country-rock bands the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and other Los Angeles-based groups as major inspirations for his music.
