The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office has announced the passing of Sheriff Roy “Sonny” Weatherford.

Sheriff Weatherford dedicated his life to the service and protection of the Sumner County community, which he carried out dutifully in his 42 years in law enforcement.

He started his law enforcement career with the Portland Police Department as a police officer in 1983. Two years later, he became a deputy with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office in 1985. He was elected Sheriff of Sumner County in 2010. Sheriff Weatherford was elected Vice President of his division with the Tennessee Sheriffs’ Association earlier this year.

“Beyond the badge and uniform, Sonny was a person of deep compassion and empathy. He understood that the role of a sheriff was not just about enforcing the law, but also about fostering trust and building relationships within the community. He took the time to listen, to understand, and to help those in need, often going above and beyond the call of duty,” Sumner County Sheriff’s Office stated on Facebook.

Funeral Services will be conducted 12:00 P.M., Friday, August 9, 2024 at Long Hollow Church in Hendersonville with Bill Sorrells officiating. Interment will follow in Crestview Memory Gardens with Sumner County Deputies serving as pallbearers. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. and Friday from 11:00 A.M. until service time all at Long Hollow Church.
