Louis Joseph Schibig, affectionately known as Joe, was born on November 20, 1948, in Clarksville, Tennessee. He peacefully passed away on May 3, 2025, leaving a legacy that will be cherished by his family, friends, and the many students who had the privilege of learning from him over his distinguished career.
Joe dedicated over forty years of his life to educating others as a Professor of Biology and Anatomy at Volunteer State Community College in Tennessee. He was not only a mentor but also a source of inspiration for countless students. His academic pursuits were complemented by a passion for nature, particularly the conservation of woodland forests and fauna. He possessed an impressive depth of knowledge regarding the various trees and wildflowers native to his area, which he delighted in sharing with those around him. His efforts in conservation were particularly marked by his proud membership and work with the American Chestnut Foundation.
Joe’s educational journey began at Clarksville High School, culminating in a Master’s degree in science from Austin Peay University. Throughout his life, he nurtured a love for the outdoors that encompassed a variety of activities including fishing, hiking, camping, gardening, horticulture, and carpentry. His hobbies not only reflected his passions but also painted a picture of a man who thrived in the embrace of nature and shared these experiences with his loved ones, particularly his children.
He is survived by his sons, Will Schibig and Jay Schibig, as well as three grandchildren, Morgan, Cameron, and Hunter Schibig. Joe also leaves behind his brothers, Rick Schibig and Arlen Schibig. He is preceded in death by his father, Herman Schibig; his mother, Iris Wickham Schibig; and his daughter, Emily Schibig.
A visitation will be held on May 8, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Hendersonville Memory Gardens, Funeral Home & Cremation Center, followed by a memorial service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location. He will be deeply missed and loved by us all.
