Brett Abernathy, age 72 of Gallatin, passed away January 3, 2024.

He was born on March 1, 1951 in East St. Louis, Illinois to the late Lucian H. and Imogene Abernathy.

Brett is survived by his wife, Lillian Abernathy (McCabe); siblings, Dianna Gean (Larry) Kay Gallamore (Jim); children, Joshua James Abernathy, Anthony Jacob Abernathy (Macy), Daniel Brett Abernathy (Amanda), and Rebecca Kathleen Abernathy; grandchildren, Seth Garrett, Caleb Abernathy, Bryanna Wylie, Katherine Wylie, William Wylie, Taylor Abernathy, Nadia Cole, Ethan Abernathy, Isaac Abernathy, Finley Abernathy, along with nieces nephews, extended family and friends.

Brett graduated from Southern Illinois University and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1971 where he served our country for 30 years. He retired with the rank of Command Master Chief, achieving the highest enlisted rank of the Navy.

After retirement, Brett served as a Veteran’s Employee Representative on the district, state and federal levels. He also worked for the US Department of Labor as the Assistant Director of veterans’ employment services.

Brett was a faithful member and deacon of Bible Baptist Church in Hendersonville, and was known for his faith and love of God, and was a strong spiritual leader. He loved watching old westerns and reading his bible, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Alexander Funeral Home & Cremation Center on Sunday, January 7 from 1-4 pm, and on Monday, January 8 from 12 pm until service at 1 pm in the chapel with Pastor Aaron Snodderly, officiating.
