Gabriel Barrera Jr., 13, who was critically injured in a two-vehicle collision on May 19, 2023 has died.
The crash involved a hit and run driver on Springfield Highway at Baker Station Road around 10:30 p.m. Friday.
The investigation to this point shows that the driver of a 2014 Nissan Murano was traveling on Baker Station Road when they ran a stop sign and struck a southbound Toyota Highlander driven by Gabriel Barrera, 43. Passengers Barrera Jr. and Santos Sontay, 22, were both seriously injured and transported to area hospitals. Sontay is recovering. Six other passengers ages 9, 10, 21, 41, and 37 (there were two 9-year-olds) sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Murano fled on foot, leaving the SUV at the scene. Fatal crash investigators are working to positively identify the hit and run driver. Anyone with information about the hit and run driver is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
