Eighty Sumner County high school students and their teachers from Beech High School, Gallatin High School, Westmoreland High School and Hendersonville High School came together today at the Carolyn Smith Innovation Center to build beds for students who don’t have one.

As part of the Sumner Gives Back campaign, this hands-on project allows students to build beds for their peers while reinforcing the values of civic responsibility and community service.

Students and teachers are working with the nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace – TN, Sumner Co, which provided tools and set up an assembly line to guide them through the process.

This initiative was sparked by increasing requests from the district’s Family Resource Center, which supports students facing financial hardship. Many of these requests have been for beds, as some students are currently sleeping on the floor.

Last year, 30 beds were built. This year, that number grew to 40, with all materials, mattresses, pillows, and bedding fully covered. Volunteers from Sleep in Heavenly Peace will deliver and set up the beds in the children’s homes.
