The Sumner County Academic League (SCAL X) concluded its tenth year Thursday night at Hawkins Middle School, finishing a fifteen-match regular season. More than 100 players from grades 6-8 across nine Sumner County middle schools competed in a Jeopardy-style format, both individually and as teams.
This year, teams from Hawkins, T.W. Hunter, Knox Doss, Liberty Creek, Merrol Hyde, Portland West, Rucker-Stewart, Shafer, and Station Camp participated.
T.W. Hunter’s A team dominated the season with a perfect 15-0 record, securing their first regular season title. Merrol Hyde’s A team and Shafer’s A team followed closely with 14-1 records, with Merrol Hyde winning the tiebreaker. Knox Doss’s A team placed fourth at 12-3, and Merrol Hyde’s B team finished fifth at 11-4.

Rhys Heinen of Shafer’s A team emerged as the top individual scorer, amassing 1,820 points, with an impressive average of over 120 points per match.

The league matches began in early October, with hosting duties rotating among T.W. Hunter, Rucker-Stewart, Knox Doss, Gallatin High, and Hawkins Middle. Sumner County’s high school academic teams facilitated the league by providing readers, scorekeepers, and monitors.
All SCAL X participants will join high school teams on January 25 at Gallatin High for the Sumner County Championship Tournament. High school teams from Beech, Gallatin, Hendersonville, Merrol Hyde, and Portland will also compete.
