College Baseball:
Vanderbilt Commodores – Win 10-0, Win 4-3, Win 14-11
The Vanderbilt Commodores continued their baseball postseason success this past weekend. First, they handled Presbyterian College 10-0 on Friday. Then in a back-to-back against Georgia Tech, Vandy won 4-3 and then 14-11 in dramatic fashion. In the last of the three games, Vanderbilt and GT went into extra innings. Then in the top of the eleventh inning, Isaiah Thomas of Vanderbilt hit a Grand Slam which gave the Commodores a big lead heading into the final half-inning. It would be a team effort to end the game though, Tim Corbin went to his bullpen multiple times in the bottom of the eleventh to get the final 3 outs. Vanderbilt allowed 1 run, but held on to the win and advanced to the Super Regionals.
Tennessee Volunteers – Win 9-8, Win 9-3, Win 3-1
The Tennessee Volunteer baseball team won all three matchups over the weekend and advanced to the Super Regional. The most dramatic game coming Friday night against Wright State. The Vols trailed by 3, 8-5, in the ninth inning. Then with one out in the inning, Drew Gilbert hit a walk-off Grand Slam to get the victory 9-8. Lindsey Nelson Stadium was deafening as the crowd roared with excitement. How would the Vols follow up their dramatic finish? Well, with 2 more wins over Liberty. First, they won 9-3, then 3-1 to advance to the Super Regionals.
Trevecca Baseball: Loss 7-6
The Trevecca Nazarene’s baseball team made their first College World Series playoff appearance since their switch to Division II from NAIA. They took on Tampa on Saturday and the game was forced to go into extra innings. The majority of the scoring occurred early. Tampa took an early 3-0 lead in the first, and Trevecca responded with back-to-back 3 run innings to go up 6-3. Tampa later in the seventh tied the game with a 3-run inning of their own. It stayed a 6-6 tie until the top of the tenth inning when Tampa plated what ended up being the game-winning run. The Nazarenes could not score in the bottom of the tenth and lost 7-6.
Nashville Sounds: Loss 1-0, Loss 4-0, Loss 3-2
Well, all good things must eventually come to an end. Unfortunately, for the Sounds, the ending came before the record was broken. After 15 straight wins, the Sounds dropped the final three games of the series against Charlotte. The Knights managed to hold the Sounds scoreless in Friday and Saturday’s contests. The winning streak ended at 15 straight games and tied the franchise record in consecutive wins, but now the Sounds will have to regroup and see if they can get back on the winning side of things.
Tennessee Titans:
The Tennessee Titans have officially traded for Julio Jones. Jones was drafted 6th overall in the 2011 draft by the Falcons and has been a leader among them ever since. He has a major cap-hit this season and the Falcons were unable to sign the rookies they drafted this past April until they cleared up some room. In exchange for Jones and a 6th round 2023 draft pick, the Falcons gained a 2nd round 2022 pick and a 2023 4th round pick and cleared up cap space. The Titans added a 32-year-old, 7-time pro-bowl wide receiver to go along with their original trio of Derrick Henry, AJ Brown, and Ryan Tannehill. This move immediately puts the Titans higher up on the contender list.
Recap:
Falcons get:
2022 2nd Round pick
2023 4th Round pick
Titans get:
Julio Jones
2023 6th Round pick
Atlanta Braves: Loss 9-5, Win 6-4, Win 4-2
The Atlanta Braves wrapped up their series against the Dodgers over the weekend. The Braves dropped game one of the series 9-5 as the fifth inning, where Atlanta gave up 8 runs, ended up being the killer in that one. After that, the Braves seemed to kick things into gear and came away with 2 straight wins over LA. Ozzie Albies continued his success at the plate as he drove in more RBIs and leads the team currently. Also, the Braves pitching staff seemed to be in sync, now they just hope to carry that success forward into the next series.
Cincinnati Reds: Win 6-4, Win 5-2, Win 8-7
The Cincinnati Red completed the complete 4-game series sweep over the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend. The highlight of the series was Reds’ outfielder Jesse Winker as he hit 3 home runs (becoming the first Reds’ player to hit 3 home runs in the same game) and helped lift his team to victory.
NASCAR at Sonoma:
The Sonoma Raceway held the next race in the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday. Kyle Larson came out of the race the victor of the 92 lap event. Larson led the pack for 57 laps and earned a total of 60 cup points.
PGA:
In an unfortunate turn of events, Jon Rahm was unable to fully defend his title at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide. On Saturday, Rahm tested positive for COVID-19 and was unable to finish the final day of play on Sunday. Patrick Cantlay came away from the tournament victorious as he beat Collin Morikawa in a playoff. Not to take away anything from Cantlay, because he worked hard for his win, but the crowd and spectators all felt for Rahm and would have loved to see both Rahm and Cantlay battle things out on Sunday.
