A Sumner County jury convicted Trevor Ethan Choate of reckless homicide following a three-day trial in Criminal Court.
Prosecutors said Choate was handling a firearm recklessly on Feb. 22, 2025, at a home in Portland when he fired a handgun, striking a 19-year-old man in the midsection.
Evidence presented during the trial showed Choate had displayed a pattern of reckless behavior with firearms in the weeks leading up to the shooting, according to the Sumner County District Attorney’s Office.
The victim later died from his injuries on February 23.
Assistant District Attorneys Nicole Furtado and Eli Freeman prosecuted the case.
Choate is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 10 by Judge Nichols. He faces up to four years in prison and would not be eligible for parole or early release if ordered to serve the sentence under Tennessee law.
