OBITUARY: William Steadman “Bill” McGlothlin

William (Bill) Steadman McGlothlin, living seventy-three great years, passed away on Wednesday, November 27th, 2024, in his childhood home. He was born on July 27th, 1951, at Vanderbilt University Hospital. He was born into the wonderful family of Russel Ward McGlothlin and his wife, Agnes Steadman (Looney) McGlothlin. He was a grandson of W.H. McGlothlin, Tryphenia (Payne) McGlothin, Dr. O.H. Looney, and Myrtle Steadman (Owens) Looney.

Bill was preceded in death by these loving family members: parents, Russel Ward McGlothlin and Agnes Steadman (Looney) McGlothlin, and his paternal grandparents, W.H. McGlothlin and Tryphenia (Payne) McGlothlin alongside his maternal grandparents, Dr. O.H. Looney and Myrtle Steadman (Owens) Looney. Bill is also preceded in passing by loving aunts Ann, Drucile, and Myrtle, uncles Grady, Jack, Haywood, and Richard, along with cousin David.

William (Bill) Steadman McGlothlin will be loved and cherished by his many family members, including his loving wife of forty-nine years, Penny Carol (Taylor) McGlothlin, his oldest daughter, Molly Tryphenia (McGlothlin) Clifton and husband, Jason Clifton, and their children Ella Grace, Lillie Bell, Sadie Ann, and Lucy Tryphenia. He will be treasured by his son Russel Steadman McGlothlin and wife Heather McGlothlin, alongside their children Anna Agnes and William Russel. In addition, he will be revered by his youngest daughter, Sarah Agnes (McGlothlin) Cook, husband, Scott Cook, and their daughter, Ellie Agnes.

Lastly, he will be remembered by his older brother, James (Jim) Hughes McGlothlin, and his wife, Judy McGlothlin, and their children Heather (McGlothlin) Piliponis and husband Rick Piliponis, alongside their daughters, Dr. Emma and Elsie Piliponis; Dr. Heidi McGlothlin and her two sons, James and Oliver McDowell. Bill will remain in the hearts of his cousins, Polly, Sally, Carolyn, and Pam, as well as his family and friends.

Throughout his years, Bill accomplished many achievements. First, he graduated from Portland High School, Class of 1969, as a student-athlete playing football. After his High School graduation, Bill continued to acquire a higher education at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he was a member of the U.T. football team and a three-year Letterman from 1970-72. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bill returned home to his family farm in Portland, Tennessee, married his wife, Penny, and became the sixth generation family farmer. He enjoyed spending quality time with his family, and grandchildren by fishing, walking on the farm, and traveling to his grandchildren’s sporting events.

The funeral services for William “Bill” McGlothlin will be on Monday, December 2, 2024 at 2 p.m, at First Baptist Church in Portland. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. William (Bill) Steadman McGlothlin will be laid to rest at Maple Hill Cemetery, carried by his grandchildren Ella, Anna, Lillie, Sadie, Bill, Ellie, and Lucy, where he will be buried alongside his parents.
