James W. “Pappy” Kemp, 96, of Gallatin, Tennessee passed away on October 14th, 2022 after a long life well lived.

James was born on February 7th, 1926 to Edgar and Sally Kemp of Carthage, TN.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the Navy. His ship the USS Block Island was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean by a German torpedo. He later served on a different carrier by the same name in the Pacific Ocean until the end of the war.

James retired as Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal. His duties included the James Meredith integration at Ole Miss, the Jimmy Hoffa trials, and the Wounded Knee uprising.

Anyone who knew James knew that he was the most loving father a family could ask for.

James was predeceased by his wife, Gene Kemp, his mother, Sally, his father Edgar, his sisters Ruby Lee, Mary, Dorothy, Naomi, and his brother Edgar, Jr.

He is survived by his children Susan Reeves (Marc), James A. Kemp (Christi), Vici Kemp, Bill Kemp (Pam), and Marshall Kemp (Brown).

His grandchildren include Bo Kemp, Nicholas Kemp, Taylor Young, Willie Kemp and Tessa Kemp. The great-grandchildren Kai Kemp and Kasen Kemp.

The funeral service will be held Monday, October 17th at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Sellars Family Heritage at Gallatin, with Rev. James Johnson and Bob Snell officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, October 16th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and Monday, October 17th from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Crestview Memory Gardens. The grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
