Howard Eugene Espravnik, also known as “Mr. E.” to his students, age 69 of Gallatin, passed away peacefully April 4, 2025 at his home. Howard was born on April 13, 1955 in Valparaiso, Indiana to the late Marie and James Espravnik. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Espravnik.
Howard grew up on the family’s Indiana farm, 60 miles from Chicago. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Indiana State University and a Master’s Degree from Radford University in Educational Media. He was the former owner of WHHV radio station in Hillsville, Virginia, worked at several other radio stations and managed a television studio for an Indiana school system.
In July of 1986, Howard moved to Gallatin and began a 33-year career as a professor and radio station manager at Volunteer State Community College.
On July 2, 1988, Howard was married to Mary Jane Edwards.
Howard enjoyed working with his students, he also had hobbies like model trains, ham radio, and shortwave radio. He also liked animals and always had at least one pet.
Howard is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Espravnik; stepdaughter, Jane Edwards; sister, Shirley Espravnik of Fort Wayne, IN; brother, Homer Espravnik of Colorado Springs, CO; and he is also survived by his cats, Sam and Chessie.
A memorial service honoring Howard will be held 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Gallatin First United Methodist Church with Pastor Steven Lee officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday from 11:30 A.M. until time of service. The visitation and service will be held in the sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Home Missions Fund at Gallatin First United Methodist Church.
