Mr. Eddie “Coach” Greer of Hendersonville, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022, he was 84 years old.
Eddie was a devoted family man who deeply loved his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Hendersonville First Baptist Church where he attended and served in several areas for 54 years.
Eddie graduated from West High School in 1955 where he played basketball for the state championship team. He continued his playing career at Belmont College, where he met Peggy Garner. They married in 1959 and they would go on to spend the next 60 years together. Eddie began his coaching career at Hillsboro-Williamson County, then became the coach at Hendersonville High School in 1966, where he coached for 25 years. He continued his coaching career in “retirement” at Franklin Road Academy, Davidson Academy, College Heights Christian Academy, and Ellis Middle School.
Throughout his coaching career, Eddie was very involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization. He influenced hundreds of young men for Christ as he provided an incredible example of a godly man while teaching them the game of basketball. He also encouraged thousands of students with his always positive attitude and words that he showed on a daily basis.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, his parents Thomas Marion & Ida Mae Greer, as well as his sisters Lucy (Johnny) Dye and Diane (Bill) McDowell.
Eddie is survived by daughters Laurie & (Kirk) Clark and Lisa & (Joe) Walker. Grandchildren: Rachel & (Malcom) Hendley, Katie & (Tommy) Patterson, Jill & (Daniel) Stephens, and Joey & (Kelly) Walker. Great-Grandchildren: Ashton Williams, Sydney Williams, Jackson Williams, Dax Hendley, Allison Patterson, Autumn Patterson, Ava Patterson, Kinsley Stephens, Molly Kate Stephens, Lainey Walker, and Whit Walker. Brothers: Charles (Sue) and Robert (Betty). Sisters: Elaine Greer and Pam (David) Meador.
Eddie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, and coach. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services for Eddie will be held at Hendersonville First Baptist Church on Saturday, May 21st, 2022 at 11:00 AM with interment to follow in Hendersonville Memory Gardens. Dr. Bruce Chesser will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Daniel Stephens, Joey Walker, Tommy Patterson, Malcolm Hendley, Ashton Williams & Jackson Williams. Honorary pallbearers: all former assistant coaches and players.
The family will accept visitors at Hendersonville Funeral Home on Friday, May 20th from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the chapel. Visitation will continue Saturday morning in the sanctuary at Hendersonville First Baptist Church from 9:00 AM until service time at 11:00 AM. https://www.hendersonvillefh.com
