Charles Robert Groves Sr., age 85, of Portland, passed away on April 30, 2024 at his residence.
Mr. Groves was born on September 26, 1938, to the late J.B. Groves and the late Rose Holubicka Groves.
Charles enjoyed what most would call a simple life, valuing fewer material things but rather spend his life investing time and energy preserving things that last. He chose to invest in his family, friendships, and the Groves farm.
Understanding the value of a hard day’s work, he worked his days until retirement at Pirelli Tire in Nashville and would come home of the evening and tend to the chores of raising tobacco, cattle, hay and corn. In his down time, he enjoyed taking his sons fishing, shooting pool, and building community at the local billiard hall and the American Legion Post 75.
As a pillar in the Portland community, most knew Charles as a long-standing patron and later employee of the Portland Billiard Hall; He loved spending his time there, keeping the doors open for others to enjoy and fellowship with one another. He built lasting friendships within those walls and made countless memories that outlasted the Billiard Hall itself.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Groves was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Bennett Groves.
Mr. Groves is survived by his sons, Chuck (Tammy) Groves of Portland & Mike Groves of Portland; grandchildren, Chelsea (Wade) Angel of Portland & Charles “Chucky” B. Groves of Portland; great-grandchildren, Lilli Angel, Xander Angel, & Creed Angel.
