Billy Albert Mason, a resident of Gallatin, TN passed away on October 2, 2024 in Gallatin, TN.

A native of Atmore, Alabama was born November 24, 1937 in Escambia County, Atmore, Alabama.

Preceded in Death by his parents, Rue and Clearance Mason of Atmore, AL, brothers Aubrey (Mary Sue) Mason (Birmingham, AL) and Autrey Lee Mason (Atmore, AL) and a sister Hazel (Max) Griffith, Sand Mountain, AL.

Survived by his wife Beverly Ann (Satterfield), three daughters: Sonia M. Crutchfield (David) and Deborah M. Holt (Bruce) both of Dothan, Alabama, Bailey Mason Davis (Sam) of Birmingham, Alabama, two step-daughters: Angelene F. Woodard (Michael) of Springfield, TN, Amanda K. Williams (Mark) of Gallatin, TN, four grandsons: Mason (MacKenzie) and Mitchell Crutchfield, Forrest (Caroline) and Davis Holt, five step-grandchildren: Hal, Jones and Beth Woodard, Lucas and Logan Williams, two great-great-granddaughters Sawyer and Cory Crutchfield, and sister Ercell (J.D.) Womack of Atmore, AL.

A graduate of Escambia County High School and attended the University of Alabama (Mobile Center) and the University of South Alabama and served 9 years in the National Guard of Alabama.

Mason retired in 2008 from Springhill Medical Center in Mobile, AL as President and CEO after serving for 32 years. He holds Fellow Status in the American College of Healthcare Executives. This represents his continued achievement in meeting the high standards of professional development, excellence and leadership as a healthcare executive. During his tenure, Mason served on the board of Springhill Memorial Hospital. He was Director and Vice Chairman of Southern Medical Health System (the parent corporation of Springhill Memorial Hospital).

Mason’s background in the healthcare industry is broad. He began his career with Beldsole Surgical Supply in 1955. His hospital experience has been extensive since 1965 when he began working as Director of Material Management at Mobile General Hospital (University of South Alabama Medical Center). When he left Mobile General in 1970 to join the staff of Humana, Inc. he was Business Manager. In his new position with Humana, he was a Financial Management Consultant and following this, served as Administrator at three hospitals in Alabama and Florida in the Humana chain. Mason received numerous accolades in these positions culminating in 1974 when he was recognized at the Humana Annual Awards Ceremony in Louisville, Kentucky for his Outstanding Accomplishments.

Mason has served on several boards in the healthcare industry including Alabama Hospital Association, Alabama Hospital Trust, Alabama Diversified Health Services, Board of Governors of Federation of American Health Systems, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama (4 three-year terms) and Coastal Insurance Risk Retention Group, Inc.

As an individual who cares about the concerns of the community in which he works and lives, Mason has always participated in civic and community activities and was Recognized by the Alabama House of Representative on March 19, 2009 for his Outstanding Community Service. Some of his service included Rotary Club – Sunrise (Paul Harris Fellow), the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Advisors, the American Heart Association where he has served as a board member with successful efforts to secure large sponsorship donations for the Heart Gala and leadership toward the largest participation in the annual Heart Walk in the local organization history to that date. In 2005, Mason was AHA Heart Gala Honoree. In addition, served as Chairman of the Health Division for the 1989 United Way Campaign, served for eight years on the United Way Allocation Committee, the University of Mobile President’s Advisory Council and the Corporate Chairman of the 2001 Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Mason is currently a member of Gallatin First Church of the Nazarene, a former member of Gallatin First United Methodist Church in Gallatin, TN, Orange Beach United Methodist Church of Orange Beach, Alabama where he served on the Trustee Committee and was a Stephen Minister. A previous member of Providence United Methodist Church in Spanish Fort, Alabama where he served as Chairman of the Men’s Ministry.

Mason was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and Alabama Football. ROLL TIDE!

Visitation for Mr. Mason will be held on Monday, October 14, 2024 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Gallatin 1st Church of the Nazarene (407 N. Water Ave., Gallatin, Tennessee 37066).
