Federal health officials are investigating a new outbreak of cyclospora, a parasite that causes severe diarrhea and other intestinal illness. As of Wednesday, 72 people have become sick, though investigators have not yet identified the food responsible for the outbreak, according to AP.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not released where the illnesses have been reported or which products may be linked to the cases. The investigation is ongoing.
The new outbreak is separate from another multistate cyclospora outbreak that federal investigators continue to trace to lettuce from Taylor Farms. The company recently recalled iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico as that investigation continues.
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can contaminate fresh produce when it comes into contact with water contaminated by human waste. People who become infected can experience severe diarrhea, frequent bowel movements, stomach cramps, nausea and other digestive symptoms.
Health experts recommend washing hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and before preparing food. Thoroughly cooking food to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit can also kill the parasite.
