A Sumner County man will spend decades behind bars after being convicted in a case involving the purchase of child sexual abuse material.
Prosecutors with the Sumner County District Attorney’s Office announced that 63-year-old Jerry W. Matheny was sentenced to 75 years in prison following his conviction on 15 counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor. The sentence was handed down by Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Nichols.
Authorities say the case stemmed from a 2023 investigation led by Sumner County Sheriff’s Office Detective David Langston, which found that Matheny purchased multiple images and videos involving a minor through CashApp.
During sentencing, prosecutors argued that both the nature of the offenses and Matheny’s prior criminal history warranted a significant prison term. Under Tennessee law, the sentence will be served without the possibility of parole.
In addition to the prison sentence, Matheny is required to register as a sex offender.
Officials say the case reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue those involved in the exploitation of children.
