On Monday, Criminal Court Judge Dee David Gay handed down one of the longest prison sentences for child sexual abuse-related offenses in Sumner County history in the case of a Westmoreland man who repeatedly raped and molested a young girl.
Skye Clinton Sweat, age 40, was sentenced to serve 190 years in prison after being convicted by a jury in October 2025 of four counts of rape of a child, six counts of aggravated sexual battery, and two counts of exploitation of a minor by electronic means in a case prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys General Nathan Nichols and Tara Wyllie.
Detective David Hightower of the Westmoreland Policed Department arrested Sweat in August 2024 after a nine-year-old child disclosed to her mother that Sweat had been engaging in inappropriate conduct with her. The victim’s mother immediately took her to the police department and, during a subsequent forensic interview conducted at Ashley’s Place, the victim disclosed multiple instances of rape, sexual touching, and sexual grooming carried out against her by Sweat for over a year in both Tennessee and Kentucky.
During today’s sentencing hearing, Generals Nichols and Wyllie asked Judge Gay to impose the maximum sentence allowed by law due to the fact that Sweat’s actions caused the victim to suffer significant mental trauma from which she still suffers to this day, the extent of the sexual acts involved were particularly vile, and Sweat abused a position of trust in carrying out the abuse.
In imposing the 190-year sentence, Judge Gay pointed Sweat’s lack of remorse, criminal history, and the proliferation of child sexual abuse and exploitation cases currently being experienced by the Sumner County justice system as some of the reasons for ordering an extended period of incarceration.
