Hendersonville has been name one of the 16 finalists in The Boring Company’s Tunnel Vision Challenge — a competition that will result in one community receiving a mile-long tunnel built free of charge.
In January, Elon Musk’s The Boring Company invited cities and organizations to submit proposals for a tunnel up to one mile in length with a 12-foot inner diameter. The winning project will be constructed at no cost using the company’s Prufrock tunneling technology.
Out of 487 entries submitted nationwide, the Hendersonville Tunnel proposal was selected as a finalist. The project is categorized as a utility tunnel, potentially designed to house underground infrastructure.
Two other Tennessee cities also made the final 16:
- Mountain Mile Loop — Gatlinburg, Tennessee — Loop
- Vol Loop — Knoxville, Tennessee — Loop
The company is expected to announce the winning proposal on March 23, after which construction would move forward at no cost to the selected community.
Congrats to the Tunnel Vision Challenge Finalists!
We received 487 entries and are down to the final 16. We’ll announce the winner on March 23, and then build it free of charge.

If selected, Hendersonville could join Nashville as a hub for innovative tunnel infrastructure. The Boring Company is already moving forward with its Music City Loop in Nashville, an underground transportation system designed to improve regional connectivity. Last week, Gov. Bill Lee announced that the approval of The Boring Company’s lease application and enhanced grading permit for state-owned property along Nashville’s highway system. Construction on the first segment of the Loop has already begun, with operations expected by the end of 2026.
