December 27, 2024 – The Gallatin Police Department warns locals of a scam. Recently, a person received a call from someone impersonating a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) agent, Gallatin Police reports.
The scammer claimed his identity had been compromised and tried to convince him to withdraw $10,000 from his bank account and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM kiosk using an account number they provided.
Thankfully, the person did not fall for this scam, and no money was lost; however, police want to remind locals that the FTC nor any government agency will ever call and ask for money and you should be suspicious of anyone requesting payments via Bitcoin or gift cards—it’s a common tactic used by scammers.
Always verify calls by independently contacting the agency using their official information.
