A Gallatin High School student has taken top honors in this year’s Preservation Foundation Society of Sumner County essay contest, continuing a strong showing from the school in the annual competition.

Madeline Bush earned the $1,000 first-place prize for her essay, Faith Rooted in Old Soil, which explored connections between First Baptist Church and the evolution of Howard Elementary. This is the second consecutive year the contest’s top winner has come from Gallatin High School.

This year’s theme, Bridging the Past: Uncovering Hidden Connections in Sumner County’s Historic Landscape, encouraged students to examine how local history continues to influence the community today.

An honorable mention was awarded to Ruby Blackburn of Merrol Hyde Magnet School for her essay, Monthaven to Hazel Path, which was recognized for its strong observations and historical insight.

The Preservation Foundation Society also recognized Amber Falise of Liberty Creek High School, who was selected by random drawing to receive a $500 contribution for classroom supplies and resources. Ms. Falise referred two student applicants, helping encourage student engagement in local history.
