Five Students Injured After Sumner County School Bus Overturns

UPDATE: The female driver was cited for failing to exercise due care, according to THP.

A school bus carrying students from Westmoreland Middle and High School overturned in a dry creek bed Monday afternoon in the Bethpage area of Sumner County.

According to authorities, the bus was traveling along Rock House Hollow Road when it lost control, hit a bridge and slid off the roadway. Nineteen students were on board at the time of the crash. Emergency Medical Services transported five students to local hospitals for further evaluation. The remaining students were transported to Bethpage Elementary School for parents to pick up.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist, while the Tennessee Highway Patrol has taken the lead in investigating the cause of the accident. Officials said they are examining whether mechanical issues may have contributed to the crash.
