The Nashville Zoo has announced the birth of a female spotted fanaloka pup on August 24, marking the fourth born at the facility. Nashville Zoo is the only zoo in the United States — and one of only four worldwide — that cares for this vulnerable species.
Zoo guests will have the chance to see the pup periodically through the viewing windows at the HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center.
Native to Madagascar, fanaloka are nocturnal carnivores and the island’s second-largest predator. Despite their small stature, they prey on small mammals, reptiles, bird eggs, and insects.
This birth contributes to the continued conservation and care of the species.
