Don Floyd Self, 87, of Nashville, passed away on Friday, June 4, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents, Omis Floyd and Oza Mae Vanatta Self, siblings; Ethel Driver, Bob “Robbie” Self, and Ann Garrison. Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Winfree Self, children; Melanie (Billy) Hendrix, Lori Morrison, Donna (Ken) McDaniel, Stephanie (Marvin) Turner, Joey Self, and Marissa Binkley. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, sister, Dorothy Wilson, brother, Jerry (Gail) Self, “Jax” and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Don was born on November 7, 1933 in Alexandria, Tennessee. He is a United States Army veteran and served in Korea during the Korean War. He retired as a foreman with Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. and was a member of Laborer’s International Union of North America Local Union 386. Don was a longtime member of the Emmanuel Church in Donelson, Tennessee. He enjoyed fishing, traveling to Gatlinburg, and watching sports, particularly Tennessee Volunteers and Titans football. Don was a good cook and his family enjoyed his special soup and apple cake. He loved getting together on Sunday with his family.
A celebration of life service for Don will be held at Hendersonville Funeral Home, 353 East Main Street in Hendersonville on Tuesday, June 8th at 12:00 PM. A gathering for family and friends will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Hendersonville Memory Gardens.
