Housed in an enchanting 1840’s farmhouse located on Douglas Bend Road between Hendersonville and Gallatin, Alberto’s serves an assortment of French and Italian foods with a soupçon of Brazilian influence. Dinner offerings include many pasta dishes, intriguing appetizers, and luscious desserts. Saturdays they offer brunch.
With the homey feel of a café in the French countryside, diners can get their meal started with a glass of wine and an appetizer. Here Alberto’s shows off its Brazilian side by offering Bolinha de Queijo, a mix of cheeses enrobed in dough and deep fried; Coxinha, shredded chicken, ham or ground beef prepared with herbs, spices and sometimes cheese coated in batter in a shell of dough made with flour and chicken broth, rolled in and breading flour and deep fried; and Quibe, finely ground lean beef, bulgur wheat and various mild spices rolled into a ball and deep fried. All are served with Alberto’s “Molho Verde” sauce with fresh herbs. Other offerings include Brie Toast and Falfel. Can’t make up your mind? Try a sampler platter.
A soup of the day and several salads are offered, but there are so many tasty entrees, it will be hard to decide. There are two types of stroganoff, beef and chicken, as well as a hearty Beef Bourguignon. Three “pastels,” which is a wheat dough pocket filled with mildly spiced beef, cheese and herbs or shredded chicken, are served. There is also Risotto, Penne with three sauce options, and four different types of spaghetti. They also make homemade pizza.
A family-owned and operated restaurant, a grandmother and her granddaughter run the back end while the granddaughter’s husband runs the front end. The chef trained in Europe and has gained experience in a number of other locations being fluent in nine languages.
On Saturday, Alberto’s opens for brunch. The menu includes quiche, an omelet, and a protein lover’s dream, the “Alberto’s Breakfast.” This breakfast includes eggs, bacon, and sausage, as well as hash browns and half of a homemade French baguette.
Sandwiches are also offered at lunch. Their chicken salad is a huge hit among diners. They also offer a BLT, a Caprese, a Fontina, a ham sandwich called a “Casa Blue,” and a Brazilian treat, the “Ouro Branco.” It is tomato, caramelized onions, chicken curry, herbs, fresh cucumbers, and spices served warm in a spinach wrap or French baguette. All sandwiches come with a side of chips, salad or soup.
Vegetarian-friendly offerings are available, including the Caldos Do Dia. It is a gluten-free mildly spicy, hearty stew with the customer’s selection of base. The “verde” option is vegetarian, having no meat and no bouillon. It is served with a French baguette to those who aren’t staying away from gluten.
Kid-friendly, they have several options on their children’s menu, including buttered noodles, mac and cheese and spaghetti.
The beverage menu lists a number of fruit juices, sodas, a number of wines and several unique cocktails, including “Caipirinha,” Brazil’s national cocktail and “Limoncello Sorrentino” made with Prosecco, Limoncello liqueur, mint, and fresh lemon.
Saving room for dessert is imperative! There is flan, Chocolate Overload Torte, mini Key Lime Pies, Macarons, Tiramisu , Mousse and an assortment of fruit tarts.
